How a Power Platform Architect Keeps Up With Microsoft's AI Certification Changes

If you architect on the Power Platform, the certification landscape under you is moving faster than any single exam you could sit. In 2026 alone, Microsoft is retiring or has retired the Power Platform Solution Architect Expert (PL-600), the Power Automate RPA Developer (PL-500), the Azure AI Engineer (AI-102), the AI-900 exam, and several Applied Skills, while standing up a new family of agent and AI credentials in their place. Chasing individual exam codes is a losing game when the codes themselves change. What an architect actually needs is a system for staying current.

This is that system: how to read the signals, track the durable layer instead of the churn, and keep your own and your team’s credentials pointed at live targets.

It is tempting to treat the 2026 reshuffle as a one-time event to wait out. It is not. Microsoft has reorganized its AI and Power Platform credentials around agents and Copilot, and the pace of change is the new baseline. The June 2026 wave is simply the clearest example: on one day, an Expert architect cert, an Associate developer cert, and a fundamentals exam all retire together.

For an architect, the takeaway is not “memorize this year’s map.” It is “build a habit that survives next year’s map.” Two architects with identical skills will diverge fast if one tracks capabilities and the other collects badges.

Track capabilities, not exam codes

Exam codes are the most volatile part of the system. The capabilities they certify are the stable part. Microsoft renamed and re-cut the portfolio, but the underlying work an architect must understand did not disappear:

• Low-code application and automation building (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages).
• Agent building and orchestration (Copilot Studio, AI Builder, RAG, connecting agents to Dataverse).
• AI governance and administration (Copilot data protection, environment and tenant governance, responsible AI).
• Solution architecture (envisioning, designing, and deploying AI-powered business solutions end to end).

Map your own skills to those capability areas, then let the cert codes attach to them. When a code retires, you are not starting over; you are re-pointing a capability you already hold at whatever credential now represents it. The durable skill is knowing where AI plugs into the stack, not completing courses.

Two honest notes an architect should carry. First, AB-100 is positioned as the forward path for PL-600, not an identical replacement; the Expert architecture credential was re-cut around agentic AI, so the scope shifted. Second, PL-500 has no direct successor at all; its credential page names no one-to-one replacement. That is a real coverage gap at the associate and architect level during the transition, so plan around it rather than expecting a clean swap.

Use a confidence ladder for new and beta certs

The fastest way to waste a team’s time is to commit a cohort to a beta credential whose objectives still move. Sort every credential into three tiers before you bet on it:

• Safe targets (earn freely). Live, stable, no retirement: PL-900 Power Platform Fundamentals, AB-900 M365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals, PL-400 Power Platform Developer, GH-300 GitHub Copilot, and AI-901.
• New but launched (watch, then commit). AI-103 and AI-300 are live replacements, and AB-100, the Expert architect credential, is current and earnable, but all three are recent enough that real prep-time, difficulty, and employer-recognition evidence does not exist yet. Treat any “how hard is it” or “is it recognized” claim about them as provisional.
• Beta (do not anchor a plan on these). AB-410 and AB-620 are in beta. The direction is real and they are the named successors, but objectives can change before general availability and practice assessments may not exist yet. Point learners at them as the aiming point while being explicit that the target may still shift.

The discipline is simple: a credential’s currency and its proven value are two different things. New certs score high on currency and low on evidence. Say so, and do not let a vendor’s salary chart talk you past it.

Follow the signals that actually matter

Most of what circulates about certifications is noise. Three signals are worth a standing subscription:

1. The official Microsoft Learn credential pages. Each carries the authoritative status and any retirement notice. When a date matters, the credential page is the source, not a blog summary. Every cert in this article links to its page for exactly that reason.
2. The Microsoft AI Business credentials blog (aka.ms/AIBusinessCredentialsBlog), where the AB-series and the retirement-and-replacement decisions are announced.
3. Partner Center skilling announcements, if you work in or with a Microsoft partner. Skilling eligibility is the hardest-edged recognition signal because it is tied to Microsoft’s own partner programs. For example, Microsoft has folded AB-series and AI-series credentials into partner skilling lists, with recent announcements pointing to AB-900 for Modern Work and AI-300 for the Azure AI Platform specialization. Those lists shift by fiscal year, so verify them against Partner Center before you rely on them.

What to ignore: training-vendor “certification pays X% more” claims. Those percentages are marketing, not measured outcomes, and they will steer a plan toward whatever exam the vendor sells.

Manage renewals on a calendar

Staying current is also not letting earned credentials lapse. The renewal cadence differs by tier:

• Fundamentals do not expire (PL-900, AB-900, AI-901). Earn once.
• Associate certifications renew every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Put each renewal window on a calendar; they are easy to miss because there is no exam-center booking to force the date.
• Expert certifications, including AB-100, also renew every 12 months on the same free-assessment basis.

A one-line renewal tracker per person beats discovering a lapsed Associate the week a client asks for proof.

The architect’s forward credential: AB-100

For a Power Platform architect, the credential Microsoft now positions for the role is AB-100, the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert. It is the Expert-level path Microsoft recommends for retiring PL-600 holders, and its skills map to the architect’s actual job: plan, design, and deploy AI-powered business solutions. It is current and earnable, but newly introduced, so treat its difficulty and employer recognition as still forming rather than established.

The part to plan early is the gate. AB-100 requires you to already hold one of the qualifying Associate certifications listed on its credential page; verify the current list there, since it shifts as the portfolio changes. From a Power Platform architect’s track, the live qualifying keys are AI-103 and PL-400. Note that two other qualifiers (AI-102 and PL-500) are themselves retiring, so satisfy the gate through a live one. The AB-100 page lists the full current set, so check it there rather than assuming a given Associate counts. Because Expert certs are typically excluded from partner skilling points, treat AB-100 as role credibility and architect standing, and earn your partner points from the Associate layer.

A simple quarterly routine

The system, reduced to a habit you can run in an hour a quarter:

1. Open the credential pages for the certs on your team’s plan. Confirm status and renewal windows; note any new retirement banner.
2. Re-point anything retiring to its live successor using the migration map, and update the plan.
3. Re-tier the betas. Check whether AB-410 or AB-620 reached general availability and now have real prep evidence; promote them from “watch” to “safe target” only when they do.
4. Check Partner Center skilling rules if partner designations matter to you, since the eligible cert lists shift by fiscal year.
5. Log renewals coming due in the next quarter.

That routine, not any single exam, is what keeps an architect current while the portfolio reshuffles around them.

Stop booking those exams; both retire June 30, 2026. PL-600 holders should look at AB-100 as the forward architect path, understanding it was re-cut around agentic AI rather than being an identical replacement. PL-500 has no one-to-one successor, so treat RPA-developer skills as a capability to keep building and certify through adjacent live credentials where they fit.

Should we put a cohort through AB-410 or AB-620 now?

Both are the correct aiming points for the low-code AI builder and agent builder tracks, but both are in beta, so objectives can shift before general availability. Use them as the direction you are heading and be explicit with learners that the target may still move. Anchor near-term, exam-graded effort on the stable Fundamentals (PL-900, AB-900) first.
