ATD Research reported in 2025 that 80 percent of instructional designers surveyed use AI tools while designing courses, and almost all of them (96 percent) use generative AI. The open question is no longer whether to use AI for instructional design. It is whether your workflow is deliberate or improvised.

AI for instructional designers is now a workflow question
Two numbers frame where the field actually is:
- 80% of instructional designers use AI while designing courses, per ATD Research’s 2025 survey of 232 talent development professionals. Among those users, 96% use generative AI.
- Faculty training is the most commonly named element of higher ed AI strategies. In EDUCAUSE’s 2025 AI Landscape Study, 63% of institutions named faculty training as an element of their AI strategic planning.
Put together: the people designing learning are using AI ad hoc, and, in higher education at least, the institutions employing them are budgeting to make that use systematic. The gap between those two facts is exactly where a structured workflow, and structured training, pays off.
The empowerment version of this story is the true one. AI does not remove the instructional design judgment, the needs analysis, the alignment of objectives to assessment. It removes the blank page, the third revision of the same quiz, and the hour spent reformatting a storyboard.
AI tools for instructional designers: start with the stack you already have
There is no shortage of “top 10 AI tools” lists. The practical answer for most institutional teams is quieter: the strongest AI toolset for instructional designers is usually the Microsoft 365 tenant your organization already licenses. It works inside the documents, slides, and meetings your courses are built from, and inside your institution’s existing data governance.
The workflows that earn their keep:
- Copilot in Word for first drafts of course outlines, module descriptions, and scenario scripts, grounded in your existing syllabus or needs-analysis documents.
- Copilot in PowerPoint for turning an approved outline into a working slide deck you then refine, instead of building from a blank template.
- Copilot in Teams for meeting recaps and action items from SME interviews, the raw material of analysis-phase documentation.
- Microsoft Forms for generating quiz drafts you then edit for alignment and difficulty.
- Power Automate for the unglamorous part: not AI itself, but the automation that routes review feedback, collects SME sign-offs, and moves files between stages while you design.
One licensing note before you plan around these: Copilot inside Word, PowerPoint, and Teams requires the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license, and Teams meeting recaps additionally need transcription enabled in your tenant. The free Copilot chat works in the browser, but not inside your documents.
Free generic AI literacy training exists, and some of it is genuinely good; Google’s Generative AI for Educators, and free introductions from Microsoft and Anthropic, are aimed at exactly this audience. What the free tier does not cover is the applied layer: how an instructional designer working in a Microsoft tenant turns those tools into a repeatable design pipeline. That applied layer is what our course teaches.
AI prompts for instructional designers: five that earn a permanent spot
Prompt lists go stale; prompt patterns do not. These five patterns cover most of the design lifecycle, written for Copilot but portable to any model your institution sanctions:
- Learning objectives from raw material. “From the following source document, draft 5 measurable learning objectives for [audience] at [level]. Use observable verbs, one skill per objective, and flag any objective that cannot be assessed with the formats available to me: [formats].”
- Assessment alignment check. “Here are my module objectives and my quiz questions. Map each question to the objective it assesses, list any objective with no coverage, and flag questions that test recall where the objective asks for application.”
- Scenario generation. “Write 3 workplace scenarios for practicing [skill], each under 150 words, with one realistic complication and no named real companies. Audience: [role]. Tone: practical, not dramatic.”
- Accessibility pass. “Draft alt text for the following figure descriptions, and rewrite these three instructions to plain language at roughly an 8th-grade reading level without losing technical accuracy.”
- Cognitive load reduction. “This lesson section runs [N] words. Split it into chunks of one concept each, suggest where a worked example should replace exposition, and list what can move to an optional appendix.”

AI for instructional design certification: the honest answer
There is no industry-standard “AI for instructional design” certification today, and you should be skeptical of anything marketed as one. What does exist:
- Course completion certificates, ours included, which show you finished the training; they are not accreditations and carry no continuing-education credit (no CEUs, PDCs, or CPE).
- Adjacent Microsoft certifications that are real and verifiable: PL-900, Power Platform Fundamentals for the maker toolset, and AB-900, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals if your role includes Copilot rollout decisions.
If a credential matters for your review cycle, the Microsoft certifications are the ones with third-party weight behind them.
